Conquer the Bear symbolizes the very essence of the multisport and adventurous athlete. A challenge that begins in February, with a snowshoe race, resumes in June with high altitude mountain bike race, comes along in July with a grueling 20 km circumnavigation of Big Bear Lake on kayak, then resumes with the 30 km of Endure the BearTrail run….this is no easy multisport challenge.

Polar, the world leader in Heart Rate Monitors in a new supporter of Open Air Big Bear, and is a perfect match for the athlete that is facing the the multiplicities of this year long challenge.

Congrats to Sara Bozorg and Aaron Flynn….Champions of the GRIZZLY, 50km with 7000′ vertical gain. New men’s course record. Insane performances all the way around.

Athletes/Volunteers….thanks can not do it justice…but that was one heck of a ride. Hope recovery is going well. We were BEAT, as we left hours after the event, and participated in Ironman 70.3 Worlds in Las Vegas, as water safety….that was a blast. Those people put on one hell of an event. We’re back in business today!!

While we have your attention….mark your calender now…for SNOW SHOE THE BEAR 5km and 10km. Never snow shoe’d? Have no worries, we have an expression…if you can walk, you can snow shoe. It’s incredibly simple, and an absolute blast…and of course, it’s the first event of the Conquer the Bear (or Cub, or the new Grizzly). Stay tuned for news!

Due to recent rains, the course, soil and overall conditions for ALL the course are simply put- 5 stars. High Altitude, alpine trail running at it’s very best.

Remember- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle…. please.

Expect traffic if traveling Friday afternoon, leave early.

We will have available: Massage, great food, music, and all the trail running you can digest.

Drop Bags for 50k (Grizzly) Runners/Other news

Drop Bags-

Grizzly/50km Runners- you may leave us with a bag, at the start line, @ 630am at the latest….We will get it up to the Advanced Base Camp, you will come across this bag 3 times in your race. NUMBER IT, Label it, with your phone number and email.

We can NOT take responsibility for the bag nor contents. Put/keep no valuables in this bag. We will get it back to base camp/Start- Finish at very end of the race…late afternoon….remember these bags will stay at Advanced Base Camp till the last runners are through. Make sure you put your things back into your bag, a few things were lost last year because runners didn’t put their things back into their bags.

Weather FORECAST

Friday Packet pick up: 5-7. Please be early. Saturday: 6-9. Reg for each race closes 30 min before start. FIRM. Friday Dinner: Several options RIGHT here in the village….our first choice: AZTECA …will be on your right, before you hit the village. Tell Rosa you were sent by Endure the Bear for a 10% discount. Try the Ceviche…it’s amazing.

FRS King of the Mountain ( K.O.M.) 15,30 and 50 km course starts with a 5km climb….it’s big, it’s awesome. Athletes racing for the Conquer the Bear will be racing for CASH to reach the top of 2n51y and 2n10….

Just confirmed: Daniel Morello of Big Bear Mobile Massage will be on site by 6:30 am, available for pre race, then certainly post race….He’ll be at the Mountain Fitness Center tent.

Mountain Fitness Center will host Endure the Bear’s finish line refreshment center.

World Champion confirms, and other VIP’s for EtB

Confirmed Today: World Champion Masters Marathoner, and returning 50km Grizzly Champion Tony Torres has confirmed, he’ll be racing the 30km…start time of 8am Saturday.

Perhaps the most successful and charismatic ultra distance triathlete to walk the earth, Suzy Degazon will make an appearance and be lining up for the Grizzly, the 50km of EtB (7 am start.). If you are lucky to get a glimse of Suzy, you’ll catch her in Hammer kit and sporting Brooks, Fuel Belt, Polar and Rudy Project.

Mexican born, and Big Bear resident, World Masters Athletic Championship medalist Rosalva Bonilla is confirmed! Recently back from scoring amazing results at the blazing hot world championships in Sacramento, Rosalva will line up with the other dragsters to have a go at the 15km of EtB. She’s also sporting: POLAR, Rudy Project and Brooks.

New Big Bear Transplant- Kurt Madden, three-time top ten finisher at the Ironman Triathlon, two-time winner of the Ultraman Triathlon, two-time top 10 finisher at the Leadville 100 Mile Trail Run, and a USA Track and Field 24 Hour National Champion.

Mt Everest World Record Holder, Jordan Romero , age 15, will attempt to complete his second Conquer the Bear. in the 30km

The race of the day is the 3 way chase for the champion of Conquer the Bear, between Jesse Haynes, Ted Devito, and Matt Smith. The winner will split $1000 with the champion of the ladies race, with Heather Devito leading Cathleen Caulkins and Rachel Grist by a fair margin. But anything is possible in this race, hint hint:)

Conquer the Cub…has an exciting race with Jimmy Johnson and Dave Baumgartner separated by just 2 minutes after the 3 races, Snow Shoe, MTB, and Kayak…THIS should be interesting to watch. Go hard guys. In the women’s race Janet Maxwell leads the field over Michelle Russell who holds 2nd place despite competing in the long course of the Snowshoe event back in February. Down-the-hill favorite and the better half of Cub leader Jimmy Johnson, Brandi Johnson holds onto 3rd place.
